Main Lesson

1. Batchim = the block's basement

One more consonant can sit at the bottom of a syllable block — this is the batchim (final consonant).

2. The magic rule: only 7 final sounds

Many different letters can be written in the final position, but they are pronounced as only 7 sounds.

[ㄹ]	l (hold the tongue tip on the gum ridge)	ㄹ
[ㅁ]	m	ㅁ
[ㅂ]	p (close the lips and stop)	ㅂ, ㅍ
[ㅇ]	ng	ㅇ

Key point: Final stops (ㄱㄷㅂ) are unreleased — unlike in English, you don't let the air burst out. Say "cup" but stop with your lips still closed — that's batchim ㅂ.

3. Why this is good news

• Reading: 꽃 → the batchim ㅊ makes the [ㄷ] sound → [꼳]. However complicated a word looks, its final sound is always one of just 7.
• Even scary-looking words collapse into 7 simple sounds. 꽃 "flower" is just [꼳 kkot].

Watch out: batchim ㄴ vs ㅇ vs ㅁ (n / ng / m)

Mirror check: lips closed = ㅁ; tongue tip visible (on the gums) = ㄴ; mouth still open = ㅇ.
